6 things to consider when planning a South India itinerary
There are a couple of crucial things to consider in the early planning stages that will affect how your Southern itinerary comes together. To give you a heads up – and to put our own Southern India itineraries into context – we are going to briefly touch on just six
Remember you can find tons more valuable information about trip planning here in our South India Travel Guide.
1) How long should you spend in South India.
Southern India is MASSIVE! The southern part of the Deccan Peninsula in India encompassing the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana as well as the union territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry, occupies 19.31% of India’s area (635,780 km2 or 245,480 sq mi) and 20% of India’s population.
Many people start by planning a short trip to South India thinking they can get a glimpse of the whole region in just a couple of days. But it’s important to understand that moving around takes up a lot of time, and some days you may spend 7-9 hours just traveling!
Anything less than 10 full days and you’ll just want to travel in Tamilnadu if you want to explore South India’s rich culture and ancient history or hang out in Kerala if a more leisurely vacation spending time in Backwaters, beaches and tea estates is your thing.
It’s possible to see a decent amount of the region in 2-4 weeks – but even then, you’ll be traveling at quite a fast pace and with several long travel days.
The itineraries here don’t include specialty activities such as multi-day treks. If this is of interest, you’ll have to carve a few days out of your itinerary to fit it in. We have included a couple of key multi-day hikes and where to do them below.
If you have extra days, we recommend using them to slow down your overall pace and spend a bit longer in each place rather than trying to squeeze more in.
2) When to visit Southern India.
August through February is the best time to visit and travel in South India. December and January are the coolest months, but note it the last week of November till about the 2nd week of December is cyclone season and it can get very wet and windy for a few days.
Peak summer is May, June and July and it can get quite hot and stuffy with temperatures exceeding 35-42 degrees centigrade.
Hotels and accommodation are most expensive from December until February end.
Our itineraries are specifically designed to be trans-seasonal.
3) Where to start your South India Itinerary
The best place is to start your Southern India travel adventure is in Chennai. If you cannot find an easy International flight to Chennai, you may want to fly to Delhi and catch a connecting flight to Chennai – 2.5 hours by air. Chennai does have regular connections from Singapore, Germany, France, UAE and Qatar, and direct flights from England and USA.
Most of our South India itineraries start in Chennai, but do not end in Chennai, but at travel hubs, from where you can catch a short flight back to Chennai.
If you are flying into Chennai, we recommend catching an Uber to your hotel. No city busses ply from the airport, and the Metro is still under construction with limited connectivity.
We strongly recommend against changing currency in the airport. The exchanges there give you 30 – 40% less than what you will get outside. Note there is no limit to changing currency – you can change as little as 1 USD, though the exchanges in the airport will try to tell you that a minimum is for 500 USD / 500 GBP if not more. ATMs are available at the airport.
4) How to get around in South India
Intercity transport is something you want to consider well in advance as it will impact how long you need to spend in Southern India to see everything you want to see. Distances between cities are substantial. Public transportation in Southern India, though very frequent, is not something we recommend unless you are on an extremely small budget. Public transport is crowded and can prove difficult.
We also recommend against self driving in India.
We suggest that you a hire a car and driver for the duration of your trip, and to budget around USD 150 / GBP 120 per day.
Note that the norm for cab hire in Southern India is you must pay for a return trip to the city where you started your journey, even if you are dropped elsewhere. For example, if you hire your car and driver in Chennai, and get dropped off in Cochin, you must also pay for the travel of the car and driver back to Chennai from Cochin.
Organized day trips are very affordable in South India and makes for a great way to unravel the cities. You can book a Private day tour of Mahabalipuram or Private Day tour of Chennai, with us.
Many interesting day trips can be found in Viator and ToursByLocals.
5) Visa and Insurance
Most foreigners are required to have a visa to enter India. You can apply for an e-visa or a visa well in advance. Read our detailed blog post on Indian Visas and how to obtain one.
It is highly recommended to get a travel insurance before you enter India.
6) Budgeting for your trip in South India
India’s official currency is the Indian National Rupee. India used both bank notes and coins, called paisa. Exchange rates tend to fluctuate, though not too dramatically. At the time of writing, 1 USD = 84 INR, 1 GBP = 110 INR.
Formulating a realistic South India Travel Budget is an important part of planning your trip, and we hope to give you a comprehensive guide on this matter. Read our blog on Budgeting for your trip to South India.
